Paving the Way to Loving Relationships: The BFGFC 30-Day Challenge

Matthew 22:37-39 “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your sould and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

No matter how difficult or impossible it may seem, as Christians, we are expected to love the difficult people in our lives. All of us have our own faults. We may be 1, or 2, or 3 of the 10 in last week’s list and not even realize it. And yet, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

We can only love others when we have the love of God flowing in our lives. I love this old song which I remember usually when I am at work and irritants and stresses are present:

Let your love flow through me (2x)

Make me a blessing Lord, wherever I may be;

Keep me pure, keep me clean

So that You might be seen

Let your love, let your love flow through me.

Difficult people are not always unbelievers. There are Christians who still remain to be difficult (!) and we are also expected to love one another.

John 13:35 “By this shall all men know that y are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

We have to always keep in mind:

Love is a decision. It is not based on feelings.[1]

We CAN decide to love everyone, including & especially the unlovables!

Different people have different ways of showing their love to someone. Some say it with gifts; some through physical touch. Others offer words of affirmation. Some people are willing to serve the ones they love. And then there are those who show love by spending quality time with their loved ones. These are called the 5 Love Languages.

Jesus already gave us the directive on how we can show our love for God.

John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

The best way that we can show our love for God is by OBEYING HIS COMMANDS.

How do we know what his commands are? Read the Word!

Some things to remember about Obedience (still from CADollar Jr’s book):

PARTIAL OBEDIENCE IS DISOBEDIENCE.

DELAYED OBEDIENCE IS DISOBEDIENCE.

If we say we love God, then we must love our brothers as well.

1 John 4:20, 21 “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.”

Be ready to be tested! If you ask God for patience, get ready for the test! If you ask God for courage, brace yourself to face your fears. That is the only way to know you have overcome something – when you go through a challenge. So when you say you love God and you want to obey His commands – then be ready to love the unlovables, for you will surely be tested!

In the NT epistles, we can find many “one another” verses. These verses teach us what loving relationships are all about, thus making them great practical applications in loving our neighbors.

28 young people gathered together in an unforgettable fellowship organized by the Firebrands Youth. This is to formally welcome the kids into the youth ministry. From this point on, the Primaries and Juniors (ages 7-12) will be known as the Firebrands Kids.

The program started with an ice breaker to help the youth and kids get to know each other a little better.

Icebreaker: Playing the Curtain Surprise game.

Then it was followed by an introduction of what the Firebrands Youth is all about.

For the main event, the kids were treated to a special screening of the pride project of the Firebrands Youth Ministry - Shade of Love (2008). There, they got to see the youth in their best performances. An intermission number was presented representing the Firebrands Kids: a special song number by Gemberlie Tiu, Geslyn Kate Tiu, and Veronica Chua.

After the movie, a Ministries Overview was presented to the kids so they can have an idea on how they can be a part of the different ministries (or simply put, "clubs") in church. Talks were given by the department heads of the following ministries: Youth, Praise Team, Compassion, Carecells & Discipleship, Creative, and Children's Ministry.

Finally, as part of the standing tradition of Firebrands Youth, the graduates and birthday celebrants were honored with a simple gift and a prayer of blessing, led by Ptra. Zarah Grace See and Sis. Carrie Ann Batay.

Assemblies of God World Missions declared 2011 as the Year of the Child. It is our desire to see every child come to know Christ - no child must be left behind.

Today at Junior's carecell, we focused on this particular theme. The kids were introduced to the idea of being under the umbrella of Assemblies of God - a world-wide Christian organization. They were also given the chance to commit their lives to Jesus Christ. Lastly, they made a poster as part of the YOTC campaign, which will be showcased next week in our adult service. :)

The "Because You Say So" Attitude

Scripture Text: Luke 5:5; John 6:67-69; John 21:19-22

Join me as I look into three dialogues between Jesus and Peter and discover three classic responses to discipleship. Which of the three is your response?

1. “BECAUSE YOU SAY SO, I WILL…” (Luke 5:5)

The disciples spent all night trying to catch fish but they got nothing. Here comes Jesus, telling them to cast their nets once more. Notice Peter’s response:

“Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

Trivia: Luke is the only gospel that recounts this response in the story The Calling of the First Disciples.

And when they did so, they caught such a large number of fish that they needed their friends help them haul the fish from the water.

Peter was a professional fisherman. He knew what he was doing. But with his response, we can see that he recognized that Jesus (a carpenter’s son, and so most probably knew a lot more about carpentry than fishing) knew better than he did.

He could’ve said, “What do you know about fishing? We’ve been doing this most of our lives.” But Peter had the “because you say so” attitude. And this is one very important attitude to take up as a disciple.

“Because you say so” acknowledges that the other person knows best, even if you do know what you are doing.

“Because you say so” says you’d rather listen to the other person than do what you seem best.

Taking up this attitude does not take away your freedom. Rather, it tells of your choice to follow someone other than your own. And isn’t that what a disciple is? A follower?

What is Jesus asking from me? What is my response to his call?

Have you tried the “because you say so” response?

“Because you say so” is the first step to discipleship. It shows your faith and obedience to the one you choose to follow.

Take the first step! Jesus says you can do what He is asking of you. All you have to do is to say it:

“Because you say so, Lord, I will.”

The Juniors celebrated the June celebrants' birthdays with a Chips-and-Cupcakes party.

23 kids were in attendance this morning. Praise God for this turnout! The kids had fun playing these 2 games: Switch and Strip the Present. It got a little noisy, but what do you expect? That's what you get when you put 23 opinionated kids in one small room together! :)

Praise be to God!

The Children's Department of Binondo Full Gospel Family Center had its first-ever Team Building event / Field Trip for all Juniors (8-12 years old). Thirteen kids participated and were grouped into three teams: the F.U.N. (Friendship UNited) Team, the Friendship Team, and the Buddy Team.

The event's theme is about unity in the body of Christ as stated in Romans 12:4-5:

⁴Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, ⁵so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

Praise God for new lessons learned, new friendships formed, and new opportunities to face in the future as we all work together in unity for the advancement of God's Kingdom.

Rock-Solid Faith: Faith in the midst of fierce trials

Imagine your worst nightmare (death of a loved one, terminal illness, rejection). Increase it tenfold in the horror scale. What will your response be?

Now, think of the trials life has dished on your plate today. Have you ever asked these questions: What did I do to deserve this to happen to me? Why are my prayers going unanswered? Where is God and what is He doing to help me?

Last week, I had one of the worst nights of my life. It didn’t involve anyone else but me and God.
Basically, I was struggling to keep my head (my faith) afloat. I was drowning in doubt and was being pulled deeper underwater by the burden of burn out.

I will always look back to that moment and praise God for upholding me in that dark hour. Indeed, I was glad that I held on, even just barely, because God came through after all.

From that experience, I was able to glean this simple but powerful lesson:
“When you feel like giving up, don’t.”
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12

From this verse, we can derive some very interesting points to ponder on:
1. “Those who love him” are those who “persevere under trial.”
2. There is an end to the suffering. (“…when he has stood the test.”)
3. A reward will be waiting in heaven. (“…he will receive the crown of life that God has promised…”)

Scripture Passage: John 15:5

As we enter another year, New Year’s resolutions are being made all over the world. It has always been an important part of entering the New Year because this habit brings focus to our goals. It is made with determination to improve oneself for the next year.

Jesus’ last “I Am” statement holds the key to simplifying our new year’s resolution list to include the ones that really matter. John 15:5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Jesus already gave us the key to a better and brighter future – remain in Him. We can make the most noble of goals we wish to achieve, but if we do it without remaining in Him – our life source – then all of it is futile. Remain in Christ, for it is the only source of abundance not only for us but for the people in our sphere of influence.

How do we remain in the vine? By abiding in His Word and spending time with Him.

Our devotional time must be one that is a devoted time with God, meaning it should be a sacred time where we meet in fellowship with our Maker. As we do so, we will be gaining nutrition from the vine, nutrition that we need in order for us to bear fruit.

Living Your Faith

Read Daniel 6:1-24

Power! Many desire it, few have it, and fewer yet have earned it. Whether it is power on the street corner of in the corporate office, certain people are obsessed with desire for power. Gang members use threats and violence, often resulting in death. Others fin d their path to power through lying and backstabbing as they make their corporate climb. Politicians may use mid-slinging and slander to gain powerful local, regional, or national influence.

Not much has changed since Daniel’s day. Daniel was another Hebrew exile in a high government office. Jealousy and the desire for power motivated certain men to discredit Daniel about his faith in Yahweh, the God of Israel. But a few power-hungry men out to get him did not stop Daniel from boldly living out his faith.

[Daniel] went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before (verse 10).

Daniel had the courage to pursue the Lord despite the danger. How much should you, having the Holy Spirit living in you, courageously live out your faith before others?

Challenge for Today: Dare to be like Daniel, standing publicly for your faith.

BFGFC Celebrates 18th Missions Convention

Last Sunday, Binondo Full Gospel Family Center had its Annual Missions Convention. This year's theme is entitled "Every Way". Guest speaker Rev. Kim Snider shared the value of reaching the nations from Jesus' "Last Words" or "The Great Commission" (Matthew 28:16-20). Rev. Kim Snider is the editor-in-chief of Moms Magazine, and wife to Rev. Bill Snider, director for Asia Pacific Media Ministries (APMM) and Assemblies of God Missionary Fellowship (AGMF) for Asia Pacific. Rev. Zaldy Lim shared a praise report about the fact that BFGFC has overshoot its missions pledge last year which already reached 101% in 11 months. Praise God for this wonderful news. After a heartfelt and challenging message, BFGFC once again made their Faith Promises for the next 12 months and praise God in faith we are targeting a higher number of pledges for the coming year.

Stand and Pray

Ephesians 6:10-20, talks about the believer's duty to be prepared and ready as God's soldier in His kingdom. In these verses, two words keep on repeating. Stand and Pray.

The premise on these three instances of standing is putting the full armor of God.

Stand against the devil's schemes, his temptations and oppressions (v. 11). It's a lie that one cannot resist him or his temptations. James tells us to resist him and he will flee. One can fight him in Spirit and the full armor of God.

Stand when the day of evil comes (v. 13). The days of evil are inevitable as everyone experiences tragedies and loss in varying levels in different times. Preparation is the ally of the God's soldier. A soldier of God must endure and not run away on days of hardships.

Stand firm (v. 14). Paul is not only speaking of momentary vigilance. At another place in this verse he says to be alert at all times. While we are in the world, the enemy will continue to try and destroy us (for we are God's crown of creation which he will never be). This is our defense against the enemy.

Three things praying is mentioned by Paul. Two mentions the manner we ought to pray. Three, what we ought to pray for.

Pray in the Spirit (v. 18). Pray in humility to the leading of the Holy Spirit, as one aligns with His will for whatever one is praying for. Pray in the unknown tongue the Spirit has bestowed to the one who has been baptized in fire. Perhaps the most powerful offense a Christian has in his spiritual artillery.

Pray at all times (v. 18). There are two "modes" of prayer. We may call it formal and informal prayers (for lack of a better term). Formal prayer are set appointments with the Lord to offer our worship and supplications to Him, absent of distractions within and around our body, mind and soul. Informal prayers are one must be accustomed to for we may not yet know it. By constantly being aware of the Spirit, just as one does his work with a companion, in simple conversations and supplications (Nehemiah's prayers are described as arrow prayers).

Pray with all kinds of prayer and requests (v. 18). The keyword here is "all kinds". It is comforting to realize that our God is a God who is able to answer "all kinds" of needs one can have. He is not only a Master Provider, but a loving Father, that desires to see the joy in His children, even in the simplest joy and surprises of life.

Pray for all the saints (v. 18). As the Christian grows he must understand that he is part of a bigger picture of God's story. Therefore, we must not only pray for our needs, but the needs of others, especially those of the faith.

Pray the fearless declaration of the gospel (v. 19, 20). As a Christian bearing the name of Christ, one must realize that he has become part of an ever-growing and ever-extending kingdom of God in the world. And one must pray for the agressive expansion of the gospel. Paul mentions praying for him as God's minister, but we ought also to pray for ourselves for confidence in living a victorious life, perhaps the only visible image of Christ to your family, friends and spheres of influence; Confidence to stand and speak for what is right against the world's backward flow to corruption.

Are you confused? Are you struggling with a big life question? Do you wish you can figure out the answer to your problem out of all the voices telling you what you should do? Listening to so many voices just tend to confuse you more, doesn’t it? Well, let me tell you something. You only have to pick one voice to listen to - one voice that contains all the answers to all your questions. The challenge is to find the right voice.

Finding the right voice
There is only one voice that matters – and that is God’s voice.

Do you have any idea how powerful God’s voice is?

Psalm 29 describes the power and majesty of the voice of God – it thunders over the mighty waters (v.3), it breaks the cedars into pieces (v.5); God’s voice strikes with flashes of lightning (v.7) and it twists the oaks and strips the forests bare (v.9). In the midst of all the chaos and turmoil, the voice of God can get through and give you peace. He “sits enthroned over the flood” (v.10) and will “bless his people with peace” (v.11).
If God’s voice is that powerful, imagine how powerful his words are.

"For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does…. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth… For he spoke and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm." (Psalm 33:4-9)

If by the very word of God the universe was created, then you can rest assured that one word from Him can change your life.

Because God said so, you can rest assured.

Listening to the right voice
“I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth,” says the song Voice of Truth by Casting Crowns. The song was able to perfectly illustrate the struggle of a righteous person faced with a big trial and his decision to listen and believe that one voice that contains all the answers to his problems.

If you are in a situation so deep that you think you can’t handle it, stop and listen to God.
If you are confused and at a crossroad in your life, stop and take directions from God.
If you are in pain and want to give up the fight, be still and get strength from God.
No matter what happens, don’t let it get to you.

(1) Win over the voice of your emotion. Offer praise to God. No matter what you feel, choose to rise above it and drown out that negative thought or feeling by praising God. Understand that you are not denying your problem; rather, you are choosing not to be dictated by it.

Take the example of the Psalmist as he wrote the following these words:

“I am in pain and distress… I will praise God’s name…” (Psalm 69:29-31)
“I have become a portent to many… but as for me, I will praise you more and more.” (Psalm 71:14)

In Psalm 33, the Psalmist also issued a call for the righteous to praise God. He even got so far as to say that it is fitting for the righteous to give praise to God (Psalm 33:1-4).

The righteous has plenty of reasons to praise God. Remind yourself of all the times God has been faithful to you. Do you keep a journal of all your prayer requests and answered prayers? Go over it and see if you don’t feel better right away, seeing how He has sustained you throughout your life.

The call to praise God springs forth from an awed heart because of the intensity of God’s love and the immensity of his goodness and faithfulness.

(2) Tune out the noise and tune in to the still, small voice. Incline your heart to the only voice that matters – God’s. Listen to what He is telling you. He will give you an answer, that’s for sure. He said so in His Word (Jeremiah 33:3; Psalm 91:15).

Others may ask, “Why can’t I hear God’s answer? I’ve asked Him a thousand times but I just can’t seem to hear him.”

You should know that God answers us differently than when He created the universe. Yes, His
voice is powerful enough to break cedars into pieces and strip the forests bare. But when He
answers us, He does so gently but surely. He does so in a still, small voice. That’s why we need
to know how to H.E.A.R. properly.

H – umble yourself before God. The first step to getting an answer is to get rid of pride and just start asking. Some people cannot even make it to this first step because they think they can do it on their own. That’s listening to their own voice, not God’s. To hear from God is to be humble enough to ask him for the answer.

E – xpect to hear from God. After we get over the asking part, we can now expect an answer from God. To expect an answer is to be actively waiting for it. This is important because if you are not expecting an answer, if you’re not actively waiting for it, you will surely miss it.

A – ctively search for the answer. God’s Word contains all the answers to our problems, all the answers to our questions. If you really want to know what God says regarding a certain matter, then look for it in His Word.

R – espond to the answer. For any communication to be successful, there must be a response to the message. If you ask God and expect an answer from Him, and when He gives you the answer, RESPOND to it. Do what it says. Otherwise, you didn’t really hear him at all.

Hearing the right voice
Imagine the effect it will bring to your life once you learn to tune in to the still, small voice.

First, you will have nothing to fear. God will always remind you of His promises when you are in tune with Him. No matter what happens, you can rest assured that everything will turn out for good because God will speak to you words of comfort and assurance.

Second, your plans will be in line with God’s plan for you. Psalm 33:10-11 tells us that the Lord destroys the plans and schemes of the nations but His plans will stand forever and his thoughts will never change. And then there’s Jeremiah 29:11 giving you an idea of how good God’s plans are for you. So if you know that God’s plans for you are the best, and then you are in tune to Him at all times, then you can be confident in making plans because you know that it is God who directs your every move.

“The steps of the righteous are ordered by God.” Psalm 37:23
“Trust in the Lord… and He will make your paths straight.” Prov. 3:5-6

Lastly, your success is definite. And with success, I mean being in the center of God’s will. Because that’s what true success is. It’s not measured by the size of your bank account, nor by the number of your achievements. Search the word and it is clear – true success is being in the center of God’s will (Psalm 33:12; Joshua 1:8; Proverbs 21:21).

So whose voice will you listen to? Whose voice will you believe? Remember the story of Jairus (Luke 8:49-55)? Someone told him his daughter was dead. Jesus told him not to fear and “just believe.” Do you remember what happened next? Whose word did Jairus believe?

You got it. It’s Jesus’ word he took and no one else’s. At the end of the story, Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter back to life! The God in the Old Testament who created the universe, who was the same God in the New Testament who raised Jairus’ daughter back to life, is the same God today speaking to you.

Someone tells you, "Your sickness has no cure."
Jesus tells you, "I am your Healer."

Someone tells you, "You are laid off from your job."
Jesus tells you, "Don't worry. I will provide for you."
Someone tells you, "You're worth nothing."
Jesus tells you, "You are the apple of my eye; I knit you in your mother's womb; You are fearfully and wonderfully made."

In the end, it all boils down to this: Do you believe what God is telling you? If yes, only then can you honestly say that: Because God said so, I can rest assured.

Blessings of the Shepherd

The book of Psalms is a unique piece of literature in the Bible. During one of our Carecells that I was a part of, someone described the Psalms as “refreshing”. From the exuberant rejoicing of David, to the mournful dirge of Asaph, from the remembrance of God’s faithfulness of Moses, to the royal enthronement of Solomon, nowhere in the Bible can best reflect the deepest feelings of our hearts more than the book of Psalms.

Psalm 23 is no different. Often called the Shepherd’s Psalm, Psalm 23 is a declaration of God’s goodness by King David. From humble beginnings, David started in life as a lowly shepherd of the family flock. And perhaps in one of his shepherding journeys a song struck in his heart to write this psalm. Psalm 23 is a picture of God’s covenant love for His people, just as a shepherd’s commitment and care to his flock. And if we could summarize this thought in a simple sentence, it would be this: God is fully responsible for a life that is fully devoted to Him.

God is fully responsible for a life that is fully devoted to Him. And for some of us, this statement puts us on the edge of our seats, for in the deepest crevices of our hearts we still find it hard to trust God in the things we hold too dearly. “For where your heart is, there your heart will be also” (Gospels), as Jesus said. Our fallen nature finds it difficult to grasp. How can someone I cannot see do something about the mess before my eyes? For some, God is a cosmic force far away, distant and uninterested, for others, He is a white-bearded old man sporting a stick, waiting for someone to fling at the slightest human mistake. And for most of us, we simply find it irrelevant because His agenda does not match our agenda.

But despite these feelings and misconceptions of who God is, the truth as the Bible tells us is otherwise. God even though is Spirit, is very present in the time of your deepest need. God is very much concerned about your well-being and your future. God is not angry at you, but His goodness and favor “lasts for a lifetime”. And if you would just find a place for Him in your heart to say, God I am in desperate need of you today, He will be there to come and be there for you at the right time and place, as the shepherd was to his lost sheep. Consider David’s declaration of blessings from the Shepherd:

Declarations of Contentment

“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake” (Psalms 23:1-3).

Notice these words of generosity attributed to the Shepherd: he makes, he leads, he restores, he guides. The shepherd desires nothing short of the best provision for the sheep. Green pastures in the original Hebrew text refer to sheltered and protected dwellings with abundant supply of green and young shoots—just the right choice of diet for the sheep. Indeed, there’s nowhere else in the world can we desire to find ourselves but in the secure and providing hand of the Shepherd. Quiet waters produce calm and soothing water from small choice streams inviting the most sensitive of God’s creatures. For us the Shepherd brings us to havens of peace and rest rarely found in the hearts of men.

In shepherd talk, when a sheep falls on its back, the idea of “restoring” a sheep is turning the sheep over and bringing it back on its feet. The shepherd keeps a keen eye on this because for the sheep this can lead to suffocation and eventual death. How beautiful is this picture of God’s restorative hand to a soul in need of healing or forgiveness when we stumble in life. The shepherd desires everything that will be good for the well-being of his flock. Therefore he journeys, sometimes from one patch of green to another, in the arid desert terrain to provide the best food and water for the flock. God’s Word (Psalm 119:105) and His Spirit (Psalm 95:7-8) are our guide that leads us to paths of righteousness and intimate relationship with Him.

Thus David finds himself not lacking anything for he declares, “The Lord is my Shepherd, [therefore] I shall not be in want.” Indeed, a man or woman who considers God as their lead, shall not be found wanting, because they are secure in the assurance that it is God who provides for them. Consider the words of the Apostle Paul, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through [Christ] who gives me strength.” For Paul, there is a greater truth more than what our eyes can see—often times, the things we do not have. He has discovered the secret of a contented life. Christ in us. We do not succumb to false contentment because God is not able, but on the contrary we choose to be content and be in peace with ourselves rather than worrying over tomorrows because God not only knows our need, but is able to provide them for us.

Declarations of Comfort

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).

Though the shepherd has his sights on our destination—our wholeness, the path to righteousness does not guarantee an easy journey, in fact for most times, life’s blessings come after life’s testings.

During the summer months, the shepherd will lead the flock to the high mountains because there the grass is greener and more abundant. And the best way to get them there is by the valleys below. These low valleys receive the least sunlight because of the shadows cast by the mountains on both sides. Thus these areas became favorite hotspots of desert predators such as Asiatic lions and wolves during those times. And is it not true that we go through dark valleys of our own? Valleys of confusion, valleys of uncertainty and valleys of the distant future sow fear in our hearts. But David finds comfort in the Person leading in front of him. “Though I walk through the valley … I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” I remember in my childhood, it was a staple for children to visit the carnival during the holidays. And one of the not-to-miss sites in the carnival was the scare house. It’s funny though, because we pay to scare ourselves by going in it, from the starting point, running as fast as we could in the dark to the first sign of “safety”. It is therefore important to take notice how David endured his dark times. He did not run, but he walked. He did not run from the dark valleys, for everyone has them. He did not run through it in panic. But David walked in a secure and confident resolve, because he knew in God’s presence, nothing is to be feared. The shepherd walks ahead of the flock for two reasons, (1) to protect the flock from ambush from predators, and (2) to serve as a secure guide for the sheep.

The shepherd carries a rod, to fight predators with it, and a staff, to guide the flock. Crooked at one end, the shepherd can pull back the sheep that get lost of their track. Thank God for Someone who pulls us back when we lose our way towards our goal! Despite the threats around them, the sheep focuses on just one thing—the shepherd. How about you, where do you look for security in times of uncertainty? God is not only able to meet your need, but His reassuring presence brings us security in seasons of instability. May you find comfort in the assurance of the Shepherd’s leading.

Declarations of Close Fellowship

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:5-6).

It is ultimately our close relationship with God that brings the ultimate answer to our ultimate need—the need to worship. “Oh Lord, You made us for Yourself. And our hearts will be restless until we find rest in You” says the ancient patriarch. We often meet this need short-handedly, we fail to acknowledge the true Object of our worship. The uncreated One, the Creator of all things.

For the sheep, a table represents the mountain plateaus where green vegetations are in abundance. This is the ultimate destination the shepherd intended for His flock, a land flowing with milk and honey. However, this area is not without challenge. During summer months, flies and other pests can be found in these areas. These can bring severe irritation and cause infection among the sheep. So the shepherd anoints each sheep with oil for protection against these unruly guests. What else could the sheep ask for? What more can you ask for of Jesus, who calls himself the Good Shepherd? Thus David concludes after observing the joy and abundance found in the midst of God’s presence, “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life.” It is not him who chases after these things, as some of us still do, but as he follows the Shepherd, so these things follow him. “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you”, is the promise of the Good Shepherd Jesus to those who choose believe in Him and do the things He believed in. As a good shepherd committed his life for the good of his flock, so does Jesus and He does even more.

God is fully responsible for a life that is fully devoted to Him. We have seen how God knows and is able to meet our needs, but one more thing is needed—a life fully devoted to Him. “My sheep knows my voice” Our part is to entrust ourselves fully to the hand of the shepherd. Allow Him to take the lead in your life. Consider the three responses of David: I shall not be in want, I shall not fear, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord. May we find ourselves living a life of complete trust. May we learn to begin trusting God in the things we haven’t entrusted to Him yet. Because the Person we are entrusting it to is the One who says, “I am the Good Shepherd.”

O that salvation would come out of Zion

Psalm 53, "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good. God looks down from heaven on the sons to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God ... Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When God restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

David paints the picture of a community absent of God (a community who chooses to alienate the rule of God in their lives). Corruption abounds, people eat each other up, "there is no one who does good." Such was the frustration of David. For he knows the end of them who neglect the rule of God--utter destruction. In his frustration, David conjures a prayer from the depths of his heart, "O, that salvation would come out of Zion!" O how we sigh in desperation for righteousness to start from somewhere, but sometimes we often negate our enabled power to change the things around us. I say enabled for we cannot make an impact in our sphere of influence much less affect our own human nature. We need enablement by the One who gives strength, who instructs us to wait (Is 40:31, Acts 1:8).

As people living in the age of grace, we know David's prophetic prayer had come to pass, indeed salvation had come out of Zion through Jesus Christ. Through Christ's work on the cross, redemption has been made possible. People who were despised, scattered and put to shame, now find new meaning under the shadow of the cross. The challenge for us, however, is coming out ourselves to the corrupt and hurting world, out of the comforts of our church pews, and out of the visage that everything is okay. Because the world is not okay. People are hurting and dying by the minute without the saving knowledge of Christ's love for them. David's prayerful cry echoes until today, "Oh, that salvation for the world would come out of the redeemed!" In our celebration of healing and redemption, may we find the in hearts the discontent that we experience abundant life while others are still out there, wandering, grasping for someone who can lead them to the Light. May we be that salvation through whom they see Jesus.

A church united is a church anointed

Unity is a non-negotiable essential in the church. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians does not delay. In fact it is the first of his agendas. "I appeal to you dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather be on one mind, united in thought and purpose" (1Co 1:10-12).

Unity must be sought persistently because with unity we invited God to work in the church. Indeed all of us have various roles that help the church run but ultimately it is God who prospers it (3:6-9). Our united effort negates strife and dissension. Thus when we are united we can focus our combined energies to create something constructive (3:10-13). Imagine reaching our goals with half the time because we decided to intentionally work in harmony together. And when there is unity, the Holy Spirit brings life (3:16-17). It is the Spirit that brings life, ie joy, peace and love, in worshipping and serving the Lord. God loves the church. And He jealously guards the unity of His church (v. 17). Indeed when a church is united, the church is anointed.

In order to foster unity in our congregations, even our small groups. Consider the following applications. (1) Celebrate Christ. Celebrate Christ rather than men. For the Corinthian church, their demise was when they started following their favorite preacher, arguing who is the best among them. Following God based on a person is a dangerous ground. For we know that man may fall and stumble. Rather than seeking the glory of man, seek to glorify Christ. And when a person in the church tests us, see it as a challenge to choose to follow Christ first. Race, social status, financial status bring division, but our forgiveness and new life in Christ unites us.

(2) Serve faithfully. "Each person who is given a trust must prove faithful." Serve diligently to any task God has given you. For it is God who gave you the gift and the opportunity to serve him in that way. Imagine when all of us did our role rather than telling others how to do their roles!

(3) Relate empathically. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Empathy is when we feel for the victory and grief of other people. A Filipino concept serves this well--"damay-an" (to feel for each other). The opposite of empathy is apathy, that is when we do not feel or not compelled to respond or do anything to make a person feel that they are not alone.

And lastly, (4) love unconditionally. Consider the words of Paul, "Eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way ... Love never fails" (12:31, 13:8). It is ultimately love that crosses the bounderies of our differences. It is love that breaks the walls of strife and divisions among brothers. There are greater gifts and skills to pursue, but the most important of them is learning how to love another person in the light of God's eyes.

Imagine a comb. A comb will not function properly if a tooth is missing. Each tooth is important for the comb to work perfectly. Each of us is important and have a unique role to play in the body of Christ. We need to work together so that we may accomplish more for Him. Psalm 133 says, "How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity ... For there the Lord bestows His blessing." In unity ... the Lord bestows His blessing. A church united is a church anointed.

The Four Cardinal Doctrines

Four of these beliefs are considered the core beliefs of the Binondo Full Gospel Family Center Assemly of God. You may hear them referred to as our cardinal doctrines. They weave in and through all the teaching, music, preaching, discussions… everything we do. BFGFC’s message revolves around these four defining beliefs.

Salvation Through Jesus Christ

Salvation is deliverance from spiritual death and enslavement by sin. God provides salvation for all who believe and accept His free offer of forgiveness. Mankind’s only hope of redemption from the fallen sinful state is through the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son–blood that was shed as Jesus died on the cross. [The account of the crucifixion of Jesus is recounted by four of His contemporaries: Matthew (chapter 27), Mark (chapter 15), Luke (chapter 23), and John (chapter 19).] (Luke 24:47; John 3:3,16,17; Rom. 8:16; 10:13-15; Ephesians 2:8,9; 4:24; Titus 2:11-12; 3:5-7)

Divine Healing

Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of all believers. (Isa. 53:4,5; Matt. 8:16,17; James 5:14-16)

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

All believers are entitled to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit, and therefore should expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all believers in the early Christian church. With the experience comes the provision of power for victorious Christian living and productive service. It also provides believers with specific spiritual gifts for more effective ministry. The baptism of Christians in the Holy Spirit is accompanied by the initial physical sign of speaking in other tongues (unlearned languages) as the Spirit of God gives them audible expression. (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4,8; 2:4; 8:12-17; 10:44-46; 11:14-16; 15:7-9; 1 Cor. 12:1-31)

The Second Coming of Christ

All Christians who have died will one day rise from their graves and will meet the Lord in the air. Christians who have not yet died will be raptured or caught up with them, to be with the Lord. Then Christians of all ages will live with God forever. The scriptural truth of the Lord’s soon return is "the blessed hope". (Romans 8:23; 1 Corinthians 15:51-52; 1 Thessa lonians 4:16-17; Titus 2:13)

16 Fundamental Truths

These are nonnegotiable tenets of faith that all Assemblies of God churches adhere to. This list is derived from the official Statement of Fundamental Truths.

WE BELIEVE...The Scriptures are Inspired by God and declare His design and plan for mankind.
WE BELIEVE...There is only One True God–revealed in three persons...Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (commonly known as the Trinity).
WE BELIEVE...In the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. As God's son Jesus was both human and divine.
WE BELIEVE...though originally good, Man Willingly Fell to Sin–ushering evil and death, both physical and spiritual, into the world.
WE BELIEVE...Every Person Can Have Restored Fellowship with God Through 'Salvation' (trusting Christ, through faith and repentance, to be our personal Savior). [1 of 4 cardinal doctrines of the AG]
WE BELIEVE...and practice two ordinances—(1) Water Baptism by Immersion after repenting of one's sins and receiving Christ's gift of salvation, and (2) Holy Communion (the Lord's Supper) as a symbolic remembrance of Christ's suffering and death for our salvation.
WE BELIEVE...the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a Special Experience Following Salvation that empowers believers for witnessing and effective service, just as it did in New Testament times. [1 of 4 cardinal doctrines of the AG]
WE BELIEVE... The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is ‘Speaking in Tongues,’ as experienced on the Day of Pentecost and referenced throughout Acts and the Epistles.
WE BELIEVE...Sanctification Initially Occurs at Salvation and is not only a declaration that a believer is holy, but also a progressive lifelong process of separating from evil as believers continually draw closer to God and become more Christlike.
WE BELIEVE...The Church has a Mission to seek and save all who are lost in sin. We believe 'the Church' is the Body of Christ and consists of the people who, throughout time, have accepted God's offer of redemption (regardless of religious denomination) through the sacrificial death of His son Jesus Christ.
WE BELIEVE...A Divinely Called and Scripturally Ordained Leadership Ministry Serves the Church. The Bible teaches that each of us under leadership must commit ourselves to reach others for Christ, to worship Him with other believers, and to build up or edify the body of believers–the Church.
WE BELIEVE...Divine Healing of the Sick is a Privilege for Christians Today and is provided for in Christ's atonement (His sacrificial death on the cross for our sins). [1 of 4 cardinal doctrines of the AG]
WE BELIEVE...in The Blessed Hope—When Jesus Raptures His Church Prior to His Return to Earth (the second coming). At this future moment in time all believers who have died will rise from their graves and will meet the Lord in the air, and Christians who are alive will be caught up with them, to be with the Lord forever. [1 of 4 cardinal doctrines of the AG]
WE BELIEVE...in The Millennial Reign of Christ when Jesus returns with His saints at His second coming and begins His benevolent rule over earth for 1,000 years. This millennial reign will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace.
WE BELIEVE...A Final Judgment Will Take Place for those who have rejected Christ. They will be judged for their sin and consigned to eternal punishment in a punishing lake of fire.
WE BELIEVE...and look forward to the perfect New Heavens and a New Earth that Christ is preparing for all people, of all time, who have accepted Him. We will live and dwell with Him there forever following His millennial reign on Earth. 'And so shall we forever be with the Lord!'
